Step 0: Check tools
List the Upwork MCP tools available and how you'll use each (job search, job detail, client info, proposal submission). Never guess job data; report only what the tools return.
Step 1: Read and analyze the job description
For each job, extract:
1. The client's core problem (in their own words)
2. The specific deliverables they need
3. The budget and timeline
4. Any screening questions
5. Red flags (vague scope, unverified payment, 'secret word' requirement)
Step 2: Match against my profile
Identify:
1. 2-3 relevant past projects with concrete results
2. Skills that match the job requirements
3. Experience that addresses the client's specific challenge
4. Any gaps or risks I should address proactively
Step 3: Draft a tailored proposal
Write a proposal that:
- Opens with the client's specific problem in my own words (not my background)
- References one relevant past project with a concrete result
- Explains my approach in 2-3 sentences
- Answers every screening question specifically
- Ends with a clear call to action (e.g., 'I can start with a 15-minute call this week')
- Is under 200 words
- Sounds like me, not a template
Step 4: Adapt tone by client type
Adjust tone based on the client:
- Startup founder: confident, fast-moving, outcome-focused
- Enterprise client: professional, process-oriented, risk-aware
- Agency: collaborative, deadline-focused, quality-driven
- Small business: friendly, practical, budget-conscious
Step 5: Submit and track
Submit the proposal through the MCP server. Log the job URL, client name, proposal text, and submission timestamp. Report a summary of all proposals sent.
Step 6: Track win rates by template
Track proposal view rate, reply rate, and win rate by:
- Client type (startup, enterprise, agency, small business)
- Proposal template (problem-first, question-first, result-first)
- Niche and rate
Refine the templates that convert best over time.
